Re: 2015 Roster & Salary Cap Thread
Not sure I agree regarding the WR position.
While Smith Sr's cap hit isn't exactly negligible, it's not out of line with his production as someone else mentioned. The caveat is, will 2015 Smith Sr be roughly as effective as 2014 Smith Sr? I for one certainly underestimated his 2014 contributions. Maybe he has another good season left in the tank, assuming he still has the motivation.
Jacoby: Cutting him saves only $750k, and much of that would be taken up by whomever replaces him. So not much savings there.
Torrey: I'm on the fence as to whether he comes back. I like the guy, but the Ravens can't afford to pay him like a No. 1, and they shouldn't. On the other hand, if Torrey does walk, do they rely on the draft for his replacement? Or will Ozzie look for a bargain FA that Kubes/Harbs can get on board with? Honestly, I don't know what to think when it comes to Torrey's future.Last edited by trailhiker85; 12-11-2014 at 03:45 PM.

Re: 2015 Roster & Salary Cap Thread
Webb
As someone else pointed out, we only save $2M by cutting him. He may not be back to old form, but are we really going to replace his value for $2M? That's a big gamble with our secondary as bad as it is. And there's always a chance (albeit small) that he overcomes back/knee issues and plays much better next year. I think he's back with no changes to his contract, but he could definitely be cut in 2016 when the cap savings will be better.
Ngata
Cut, cut/re-signed, or extended. Seems everyone agrees that he won't play under his current contract.
Canty
Not sure about him.
SSS
Coming back under current contract. I don't think the Ravens sign him to a 3-year deal if they weren't planning on keeping him for at least 2 years. He's definitely played well enough that they're not going to be forced to change their minds on that.
Koch
Could see anything here. Cut, extended, or kept under current contract. I imagine they'd like to keep him if we don't feel the cap squeeze too tight.

Re: 2015 Roster & Salary Cap Thread
You all are smoking crack if you think SSR is going to be cut. He is CHEAP, and his cap numbers are a joke compared to his production.
Show me another WR putting up those kind of numbers that cheap who not under a rookie or try me contract. On top of that, he actually blocks and plays the game the raven way. His attitude alone is needed on this soft ass offense. Management knows this, he isn't going anywhere in 2015.
Webb will be back, his cap savings are minimal and we are thin at CB. Jimmy will be recovering, Gorrer (probally resigned) recovering and zero depth after that. Look for them to draft a CB and bring in a FA.
Ngata is gone. Hate to say it, he's been a favorate since he was drafted. He is WAY to expensive for his declining production. 4-5 years ago, hes worth the money. The last 3 years.... he's been the biggest waste of $ on the team. He plays less snaps each year and his impact is not what it once was. He can be replaced MUCH cheaper while grooming younger guys to be future starters/mainstays of the DLine.
Canty is gone. He's been a FA bust with little/no impact on the game and is often injured. There is enough depth he is not worth his cap savings.
Koch. Before this season, I thought he was gone. Steady decline over last 2 years and making good money. He has resurged this year and is part of the Tuck/Morgan/Koch team that has cultivated one of the best kicking units in the NFL. He is one of the better placeholders in the league. He will probably be extended to spread his cap out. I wouldn't mind seeing some incentives put into his contract tying his price to production.
The big question is Joe. With the Cap blooming over the next couple years, they HAVE to do something with Joe's cap. $30M is going to be tough to swallow. With the above moves, resigning our homegrown players, we should have a decent shot at picking up a WR and Corner on the FA market. The Rice/Pitta shit really put a hamper on this team's cap space over the next 2 years. I would be surprised if Pitta ever plays again.

Re: 2015 Roster & Salary Cap Thread
That depends on how far the Ravens go this year, if they somehow make another magical SB run then he might retire. If his body feels good he'll play at least one more season since the Ravens have done nothing but treat him with respect and allow Smith Sr. to be himself.

Re: 2015 Roster & Salary Cap Thread
2015 could be the year of the dead money. If Webb and Ngata are cut we're looking at:
Rice: $9.5m
Webb: $10m
Ngata: $7.5m
Plus possibly guys like Canty, Koch and Jacoby to bring it above $30m.
After that, however, we'd be in a much better position to handle Joe's 2016 cap spike (although that will be dealt with with an extension).
EDIT: And Pitta's cap hit will probably also be "dead" money, even though he's still on the roster next year.

Re: 2015 Roster & Salary Cap Thread
Troof...and I think this is what it's going to come down to...provided he finishes the season and playoffs well. But he needs to ramp it the hell up.
Admittedly, I was looking at Senior through the wrong lens until about a week ago.
He's been a bargain for us, and also relative to his peers.
He's currently 18th in yards with a cap hit of $2.2M.
The average cap hit in 2014 for the guys ranked 11th - 25th in yards is $4.8M.
Hypothetically, if the same guys rank 11th - 25th in yards for 2015 then their Average Cap Hit (assuming no restructures) would be $6.9M.
This does NOT count the mega deals coming to AJG (16th) and Cobb (12th) for 2015.
Senior has a 2015 cap hit of $4.2M
Same 2015 hypothetical for the immediate five guys above him and five guys below, for receptions, the ACH is $6.8M. (Does not include Cobb and Crabtree).
Same for all 16 guys with 6 TDs, the ACH is $6.5M (well, so far b/c OverTheCap.com is running slow as hell, so I didn't pull all of the cap hits for this group).
So this simple look at the big-3 WR stats points to Senior still being a bargain for 2015, if he performs on par.
A deep look could reveal something different, but I'm not there.
I have no idea how to figure out what his "bargain-floor" stats would be, but it looks like he could fall off a bit in 2015 and still not become a liability. Of course, there are the opportunity costs too.
The MIA game was a good turn-around statistically, but I think that if he under-performs for the remainder of THIS season (POs included) then the decision gets a bit more difficult."The Ravens are not taking Jimmy Smith at 26!" -- Me, the day before the 2011 Draft
"On their way to the podium, the Ravens FO is going to collectively step over my dead body and select...Breshad Perriman." -- Me, the day before the 2015 Draft
