Re: Stupid standings question: How many games behind?
This is more accurate then saying it's a 1 game lead. Not sure it's exactly 3/4's, but it's definitely not a full game.
After all, as you mentioned, if we lose to Cinncy on Sunday, they would retake 1st place with a .643 winning percentage, as ours would be .625. So, obviously, we do not have a FULL 1 game lead.
But, it's more than a 1/2 game lead because if this week was our Bye and Cinncy beat whoever on Sunday, they would still be behind us at 4-2-1 (versus our 5-2).
But, as others have said, it will straighten out a little when we hit the Bye.

Re: Stupid standings question: How many games behind?
Not really, Ravor! You are treating GB and winning percentage as the same measure. They are not. They only coincide at .500.
Ravens are one full game ahead of the Bengals, and, seperately have a .714 to .583 winning percentage advantage over the Bengals.
Not really. Unless the Ravens tie a game by the bye week, we will still have to consider that pesky 1/2 game lead.In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T came in fourth, behind ML King (3rd), Abe Lincoln (2nd) and Homer Simpson (1st).

Re: Stupid standings question: How many games behind?
IDK, T, it can't be a game lead because if it was, then they'd be tied with a Bengals win. But, they won't be.
And, I realize that the tie messes things up, but they will then, at least, be on even ground as far as games played, which will truly make it a 1/2 game or 1 1/2 game lead (or whatever). Right now, it's something different than that, which is what I was trying to get at.

Re: Stupid standings question: How many games behind?
Pause right there! Mixing apples + oranges again.
If the Bengals wre to win next Sunday, they would move to a .667 winning %, while our team would fall to a .625 winning %. The NFL determines the Division winner by best winning percentage. Notwithstanding a "tie" in calculating "games behind", the Bengals would climb back into 1st place via .042%.In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T came in fourth, behind ML King (3rd), Abe Lincoln (2nd) and Homer Simpson (1st).

Who wins the division if say the Ravens wound up 11 - 5 and Cincy wound up 10 - 4 - 2?

Re: Stupid standings question: How many games behind?
A tie counts as 1/2 game won and 1/2 game lost. To give an example, check out the current standings on NFL.com. The Bengals are 3-2-1, equivalent to a record of 3.5-2.5. This translates to a winning percentage of 3.5/6 = 0.583. Under the scenario that you give, the Ravens and Bengals records would each to equivalent to 11-5 and the division would come down to tiebreakers.
EDIT: Let's take this a little further to answer the original question. Games behind are calculated as follows:
Games behind = (Team A wins -- Team B wins + Team B losses -- Team A losses) / 2 where A is the leading team and B is the trailing team.
In this case,
GB = (5 -- 3.5 + 2.5 -- 2) / 2 = 1
So the Ravens are technically one game ahead of the Bengals.
This is all academic though, as games behind has little meaning in sports where ties occur because the ties tend to through a big monkey wrench into the math.Last edited by TheRockDoctor; 10-22-2014 at 05:15 PM.

Re: Stupid standings question: How many games behind?
Winning percentage takes ties into account. Take a look at the current standings. If you discount the Bengals' tie, then their 3-2-1 record would give them a winning percentage of 0.600, but that's not what it's listed as. It's listed as 0.583, because a tie counts as a half win.
