Trading a WR for a CB
There is a lot of speculation that the Ravens will trade a WR for a CB. If it happens, it will likely happen soon. It certainly makes sense that it will happen:
- Ozzie recently created more cap space
- the Ravens have kept 7 WRs on the roster
- the Ravens cut Dominique Franks and Derek Cox, leaving CB ranks very thin
So why clear so much cap space if you don't plan on bringing in someone with a big contract? And who would you trade?
Speculation in the media is that the Ravens would trade Deonte Thompson. I think this makes a lot of sense - he had some big plays in preseason, a good camp, and is a very fast dude. But my son argued against that theory. He thinks that Deonte isn't enough to trade for the kind of corner whose contract would require that the Ravens clear cap space.
His theory is that the Ravens will trade Jacoby Jones for a corner. His point is that Jacoby isn't really that great a WR, so it doesn't hurt the offense to lose him. Yet he is a big play guy who can upgrade a weak WR corps AND a great punt and kick returner. With Campanaro and Thompson doing well returning in the preseason, perhaps the Ravens feel they can let Jacoby go.
So I ask you - who do YOU think they would trade. And who do you think they will trade for?
I apologize if this has been covered in another thread. I didn't see a recent one, and I'm curious about what people think.

Re: Trading a WR for a CB
Trading Jacoby Jones would cause a pretty big cap hit. They just resigned him to a 4 year deal which means the entire $4.5 million bonus would hit the cap. That move wouldn't make any sense and even with the Webb restructure they don't have the space to do it

Re: Trading a WR for a CB
I don't think you could get a quality CB straight up for Kamar or Deonte. Both of those players are #4-6 WR's so you shouldn't expect more than a #4 CB AT BEST in return (maybe less considering CB depth is harder to find than WR depth). Jacoby is a 30 y/o return specialist so I wouldn't expect anyone to give up a quality CB for him. JJ brings value to the Ravens so unless they can get an experienced #2/#3 CB (which I highly doubt) then I don't think its worth it for us. Personally, if healthy, I'm very comfortable with a Smith/Webb/Cox/Jackson rotation. I think that is potentially a top 10 CB lineup.

Regarding cap space, now that everyone counts on the cap, we only have about $3 million in space.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HDAlthough Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

Who is speculating about this trade? Doesn't seem like a smart move on it's surface.

Re: Trading a WR for a CB
In terms of what it would take to land a solid corner Gatorman's son may be on to something. However, JJ's cap hit and recent resigning make me think him being traded is pretty unlikely, but you never know. It's not the Raven's MO to get rid of players that they've just given new contracts. Most of their trades involve fringe players.
On a personal level, both my daughter and I would be pissed. She loves his game and thinks he's a riot, so she's long wanted his jersey, but I urged her to wait until we saw what happened with him in FA. When they resigned him I set about locating an alternate black one, which is her favorite. Ultimately, I did. Not easy to find though, unlike Flacco, Suggs, etc. So neither one of us would be happy if they moved JJ.

I could see them trading Aiken or Thompson for a CB but it's not going to be a player that most of heard of. They'll get some other teams #5 Corner. At best it would be a depth for depth trade. You're not getting a nickelback or higher.

Re: Trading a WR for a CB
I agree that the Ravens are not likely to get a starting-caliber CB in trade for a back-end WR. Far more likely to get one for a proven commodity like Jacoby, but after finding out what the cap hit would be I agree that is also highly unlikely.
IMO (FWIW) the hypothetical trade is a Ravens back-end WR (Deonte) not for a player but for a 2015 draft pick. Oz hung onto 7 WRs in order to force the interested team(s) to raise their offer(s). My guess is Oz is asking for a 4th-round pick, has been offered a 7th, & eventually they'll agree to a 5th, & Cox will rejoin the roster. (And if all this turns out to be totally wrong, BFD--that's why they call it a guess! :D)...If yinz ain't vaxxed & boosted by now, ain't nuffin' I say gonna change yer mind. Just don't drop dead on my lawn.

Re: Trading a WR for a CB
By only carrying 4 CBs with 3 of them recovering from an injury it's reasonable to think there's something in the works. Because of the dead money trading JJ doesn't seem likely, but I wouldn't totally dismiss it if another team wants him badly enough. As pointed out, not a great receiver but he's one of the most dynamic big play guys out there. Deonte makes more sense, but he can't have that much value. If they are looking to trade him for someone of greater value they can always throw in a later round pick to sweeten the deal.

Re: Trading a WR for a CB
Not to cause a rumor to start, but is there a chance we have too many ILBs and the showing Arthur Brown displayed in the 4th preseason game could be used upgrade the CB position with a starter?
Remember when Bynes basically started playing above Brown in the preseason and we were questioning why? How can a 2nd rd pick fall so behind and not get noticed by the talent evaluators? Is Darryl Smith really going anywhere next year?
Maybe a team such as the Giants, Bills, Cardinals maybe interested and what are they willing to part with? Could they give a 2nd rd pick or possibly a player of equal value. Is Webby healthy enough to last a year? Is Jimmy? Who says next year the way the defensive team is coming together that we don't move into a 4-3 scheme? I could see a player like McPhee, Jernigan, Mosely, and even Brandon Williams in that scheme can you?
Not saying this is probable, just putting on my tin foil hat.
BAH, this entire post is blasphemy smh.

Re: Trading a WR for a CB
Yep - no way they're getting a #3 CB for a #4-5 WR. Hell, with the value placed on DB depth in the pass-happy NFL these days, you probably aren't getting a #3 CB for a #3 wide-out (Jacoby).
Any quality CB would need a player and a mid-high pick. I can't imagine this is anything but idle fan speculation.

Re: Trading a WR for a CB
I'm not sure we are getting a player or even looking for a trade for a player
My guess is trying to recover a 5th and/or a 6th round draft pick next year, we traded the 5th for Zuttah, and the 6th for Campanaro this year.
We do have an extra 7th (Miami-McKinnie)
It could be a player if we get the right fit, but I'm guessing we are more interested in picks
(adding we should get 3 comps but who knows what Jones/Oher will bring -Corey?Ihedigbo)at one point of my life I was exactly Pi years old
