Re: Draft: Alabama (Saban) players since 2009

I see a lot of high picks that have not really made a name for themselves in the NFL (or if they have it isn't a good name).

This is why HaHa and Mosley scare me to death in Rd. 1 (or 2 for Mosley).

Plus I saw this earlier (Rotoworld):

ESPN Boston expects the Patriots to remove OLB Dont'a Hightower in all sub-packages this season.
Hightower was one of the worst cover linebackers in the league last year, so the Patriots are limiting him to more of a two-down role. Jamie Collins projects to get the majority of snaps opposite Jerod Mayo in nickel packages.

    Another Alabama underachiever.

We wanted Hightower so bad too.

    14 First round picks.

How many have performed like First Round talent in the NFL?

    3?

The 2013 class looks to be the best. Still too early to tell for some of these guys.

Maybe I am skewed because Cody and Upshaw have not exactly set the world on fire. Cody is lucky to have a job.

But we see guys like Hightower doing nothing much. Ingram and Richardson really haven't done much.

Now compare some of the talent that came from FLorida in the same time frame:
    Percy Harvin
    Aaron Hernandez
    Brandon SPikes
    Maurkice Pouncey
    Joe Haden
    Mike Pouncey
    Shariff Floyd
    Jordan Reed

This list to me seems far superior to the Alabama players in terms of actual NFL talent.

Alabama players scare the hell out of me.

Hightower was the guy most of us wanted the most in that draft. Bellicheat got him and we were pissed and ended up with Upshaw.

Looks like neither did much which is why I don't want anyone from Alabama. Nick wears them all out before they get to the NFL.

There may be some legitimate truth to that.

I did a check on Miami, we have had 13 Hurricanes, currently none

    Vinny Testaverde
    Willis McGahee
    Damien Berry
    Tommy Streeter
    Leon Searcy
    Kipp Vickers
    Bryant McKinnie
    Ray Lewis
    Tavares Gooden
    Spencer Adkins
    Robert Bailey
    Duane Starks
    Ed Reed

Miami did have 4 pro-bowlers last year Antrel Rolle, Jimmy Graham, Andre Johnson, Frank Gore
And in 2012 6, Ed Reed, Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, Vince Wilfork, Frank Gore, Chris Myers
And for 11 and 10 add names Ray Lewis, McGahee, Vilma, Beason, Devin Hester, Meriweather

There is an article by SI last September on most college players on NFL opening day rosters
    http://college-football.si.com/2013/...d-nfl-rosters/
    1. USC — 40 players
    2. LSU — 39
    3. Miami — 38
    4. Georgia — 36
    5. Florida State — 31
    5. Texas — 31
    7. Alabama — 30
    7. Cal — 30
    7. Tennessee — 30
    10. Ohio State — 27
    10. Oregon — 27
    12. Florida — 26
They go on to talk about Alabama but are amazed that Tennessee and Cal both had 30

Just to give some love to Alabama, though lord knows why I would want to do that, I give you Robert Lester, the UDFA and starting strong safety for Carolina last year. Opposing QB's had a 49.6 rating when throwing his way.

I personally did not want either Upshaw or Hightower. Mainly because I do not want to see the Ravens ever use a first rounder or early 2nd rounder on an ILB or an OLB that can't rush the passer. Similar thought on taking RB in the first two rounds. Those type of players can be had in the 3 - 7 range.

I also am not a fan of picking Alabama players early. Saban beats the snot out of his players in practice. They all come in with a lot of mileage on their bodies. The other issue is that is really hard to determine how good a player is because they have so much talent across the board that it may cover up some deficiencies that would be exposed on a less talented team.

Hightower should have never been depended on to cover anyway, it's no where near his strength and it's why I had no problem passing over him in the first.

First of all, I don't think it's fair to evaluate anyone from the 2011 draft on. You have to give them four years to prove their worth. From those years, 2011 doesn't look bad right now, 2012 looks awful but you have to give them a couple years, and I'd say 2013 looks promising. The three first round picks all showed promise.

Also, I think you have to also realize how much of a crapshoot the draft really is. By looking at the 2006-2010 drafts I'd say 25-50% of first round picks live up to their billing depending on the draft year.
