Re: State of the Terps Hoops Program
TURDgeon can't coach for sh-t. Throw the Brinks truck at Jay Wright. Oh, wait...the athletic department is short on funds. We have to suffer through at least another two years with our current detriment at the helm.

Re: State of the Terps Hoops Program
Actually Debbie Yow is the one who f@cked over the program by mismanagement of funds. Who can forget the story of her going to Gary Williams not 3 years removed from a national title and asking him to use a charter bus instead of flying to away games? A bus? For a major college hoops program. Good thing he told her to go f.ck herself. She allocated funds to the non revenue generating sports like women's field hockey and swimming, while kicking the can down the road. Then she jumped ship and left Kevin Anderson with a mess.

Re: State of the Terps Hoops Program
Exactly.
And he's still getting screwed over by the University. If you believe John Feinstein (he's well connected at UMD), Anderson wanted to bring in Mike Leach instead of Edsall but was basically told you're hiring Edsall or your gone. It also doesn't help that Anderson and Gary are friends.

Re: State of the Terps Hoops Program
Was talking to my son about it last night. It was nice to see them end the regular season on a high note but damn they didn't even make the NIT! Pathetic and wait until they're facing Mich St., OSU, Wisconsin, etc. on a regular basis.
I have patience that next year will be better but with the facilities they have and Underarmour, they should be able to attract top talent IMO.

The most disappointing thing about the Turtles to me is that they just look poorly coached. Turg has a proven track record of maximizing performance, getting the most out of mediocre talent. At MD, it's been the opposite and I don't know why. They jack up wild quick threes when they should be milking clock. They make stupid fouls. They make lazy passes. They go to sleep on defense like they did in the last play of the season.
I would feel better if they were just overmatched."Chin up, chest out."

Re: State of the Terps Hoops Program
Turgeon sucks but he's here for another 2 years at least due to that stupid ass contract Kevin Anderson gave him.
I never thought I'd feel better about Randy Edsall and the direction of the football program than our basketball program...and that's extremely worrying.
To think we could have had Mike Leach and Sean Miller if it weren't for Kevin bumbling Anderson. He can't close deals, is lazy and makes horrible hiring decisions.Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

Re: State of the Terps Hoops Program
I was responding to the post about Kevin Anderson screwing over the program. Yow and her feud with Gary Williams is well known. She actually wanted to fire him in '07, but didn't count on the fact that he was well respected among his peers, and more importantly, had major clout in College Park. Anderson is in no way getting a pass, either. He should have never fired Freidgen, and like Woodlawn stated, can't close. We almost had Sean Miller, but Anderson switched up at the eleventh hour and started haggling over the contract and Miller said no thanks. Word is Miller was all set to make the announcement that he was leaving to come to Maryland but Anderson screwed it up.

Re: State of the Terps Hoops Program
She no doubt made the better BB coach hire, but I do get annoyed as hell when people blame all our financial woes on Anderson.
She is the one who oversaw us build a BB arena that is unable to host other events (who the hell builds a new arena that can't host concerts/WWE/conventions these days) and sits unused for almost 310 days a year. She oversaw a ridiculous expansion of Byrd where we have tons of unused suites...she went ahead with the Tyser expansion when in reality, they should have torn Tyser down and went with a more symmetrical stadium. She insisted on having 27 freaking sports at a school that does not monetarily support it's Athletic Department and gets no financial support from the government to keep those sports going. She fueded with Gary basically the entire time he was here, shortchanged his staff and restricted his ability to hire coaches at competitive salaries while backing up the brinks truck for Brenda Frese and her assistants (no way the womens assistants should have been making more than Gary's). She took all the credit for our tremendous success from 2000-2004 even though she didn't hire Gary, and was forced to hire Fridge, and then threw them under the bus at every opportunity when both sports started to struggle some. She is the one that took the option to take all of the rights fees for Comcast and Capital One for our stadium and Arena early so that even though both have naming rights for another 10+ years, the fees were all spent under her watch and we are not and won't be receiving any money for those rights until the contracts are up. She cooked the hell out of the books, used every bit of resources she had to borrow future money knowing at some point we'd have to bite the bullet and pay Paul...and ran out of here as soon as that happened.
I can't fucking stand "Dr." Yow or her wanna be coaching husband. Anderson is terrible, but at least he has the nuts to make some very hard decisions that he knows are not popular and will make him look bad in the public eye.Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.
