Ngata contract talks went "nowhere"
https://twitter.com/RavensInsider/st...50880310759426
per AW.
I would have thought he would have wanted to get extended as well. His cap number the next 2 years is a bit harsh. I still think hes playing at a high level, and i know some on this board think hes not, but hes one of those guys you see his impact when hes not around immediately, imo, even when hes not showing up in the stat lines.
If the team wanted to extend him when he has all the leverage, does that mean theyll still want to next year? or going nowhere being more mutual and will be revisited.-JAB

Re: Ngata contract talks went "nowhere"
I'm not sure that Ngata wants to play past his current contract. He's talked about retirement the past couple of seasons. I have a feeling that Ngata plays this season at his current crazy rate because there is no way to get around it and then he either retires or is released in 2015.

I heard him say the same things. May be easier for him to talk about retiring when hes slotted to make 16m/year rather than when thats no longer the case. His willingness to play could be part of the issue though, doesnt want to get extended because he has no plans on playing longer. that would be somewhat surprising even with him hinting at it. would be unfortunate for us for lack of cap relief and also losing a great player a bit early.

This.
The guy was great for a few years. Absolutely dominant player.
He's just kind of tapered off the past few seasons. I partly blame the Ravens for not having adequate rotational players along the DL and keeping Ngata on a pitch count. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Filmstudy may have suggested that Ngata has played almost all of the defensive snaps for the past few years. That's a lot of snaps for a 345lb man.Disclaimer: The content posted is of my own opinion.

Re: Ngata contract talks went "nowhere"
Ngata is still an effective run-stopping NT, but no longer offers any pass rush and must be kept in a constant rotation due to persistent nagging injuries and conditioning/weight issues. His ability to plug up the middle makes him a key player in the Ravens' New England-style 3-4 zone defense. The problem is the NFL is leaving that style of defense, and players like Haloti Ngata, behind.
I would not make a long-term investment in Ngata at this point. He's coming off of his best year of the past few, but even then he was only our 4th or 5th best defensive player at any given time last year. The Ravens' defense will survive without him, although it will mean making long-overdue schematic changes.

Re: Ngata contract talks went "nowhere"
I think Ngata's season high for snaps was 54 of 68 (79%) vs. Browns. That's a lot of snaps, but he's more frequently in the 50-60% range. When he climbs above 60% of snaps he becomes a nonfactor in the 2nd half. I think you're absolutely right that his snaps should be reduced, but this guy is the #2 highest paid defensive lineman in the NFL and part of his wearing down is his own fault: Haloti is probably playing in the 360's right now.
His best season was in 2011 when he slimmed down into the 320's. He could really help himself by dropping some of the bad weight he's picked up over the years and getting more serious about his conditioning, which he admitted recently he doesn't pay as much attention to.

Re: Ngata contract talks went "nowhere"
personally I think 2010 was his best year. 2011 was about the same statistically but he got pushed around in the run game a lot more, which is why he said it was a down year and put the weight back on in the offseason.
im not sure hes playing at 360... i think hes right back at his 340 he was playing at prior to 2011.-JAB
