Preston Keeping Kubiak-Gate Alive (and insulting everyone)
I caught Mike Preston on 105.7 this morning and I almost crashed listening to what he had to say. Even Steve Davis, while saying Mike has been doing this a long time and doesn't make stuff up, didn't sound like he was a true believer.
I will para phrase a few things I remember him saying:
1. Ref to Kevin Byrne: "When your a a PR guy, you get paid to lie and that's what you do and he does a very good job at it."
2. On Harbaugh: "I think John got a little too big for his britches, I think he was the emperor with no clothes on and they let him know it. They just said basically ok you know we don't trust the decisions that your making we're gonna do our own thing."
3. "You can give any kid a column or a blog, and he can write it. Have at it, they have their opinion and I have mine."
So in three sentences, he insulted the entire Raven's organization, and the entire listening public that may be the readers of his column.
I will not get into the first two, because in reality, I do not know. I wasn't there. But I do have something to say about the third.
I did not have a lot of personal time during my 20 years in the Army to do things like write and go to concerts. So when I retired in 2006 I started doing both. I do not write because it is my job Mr. Preston. I write because I love to write. To me that is the big difference between you and I. Writing is your job. You get paid to create controversy, so people read. To paraphrase the Outlaw Josie Wales "Lyin ain't much of a living". I do not know you personally, but if water is wet I call it wet, and when I smell BS I call it BS.
In my entire professional life in the Army and after, I am paid to be a problem solver. I research and research problems and solutions, pick a solution and implement that solution. I have done that for things I do not necessarily have a personal interest in because it was/is my job. Writing about the Ravens/Orioles allows me to take that same skill set and apply it to something I love. When I say Michael Oher led the team in sacks allowed (8) and overall pressures (56) I have the stats to back it up and I show that source.
When you say "someone" told you something that happened in a room you were not in, you don't do that. I know all about protecting a source, but to flat out call someone a liar, well that is arrogance. Why should I believe you over someone else? Who are you to be the all knowing all telling? I know that you are a professional columnist and all, but the arrogance in which you turn your nose at the people of this city who actually read your column and help pay your salary is truly insulting.
I have read your column for years. Most of the time, I love your point of view. Every once in a while I question your intent. When you said Eddie Murray "deserved far better than he got" I thought you were right on. It killed me to see him treated the way he was by the public and media in Baltimore. Then you called out Ed Reed right before a huge playoff game (AFC Championship) a few years ago; questionable.
I go out of my way to "get it right" because I have to. People like you are chomping at the bit to make sure us "amateurs" never get any credibility. Some have been able to overcome this "professional" media bias, like Tony and the folks here at Russell Street. Some of us just keep plugging away. There are a lot of good writers out there that do not have "professional" writing jobs and the access to "sources". They do what I do, analyze the data and make form an opinion.
How about you do the same for once?Last edited by Mike_Z; 02-07-2014 at 05:15 PM. Reason: updating after listening to recording; correction

ok, i will pay someone to send me a GIF of a dead horse beating another dead horse....
in all seriousness it proves what everyone thinks of Mike anyways, a blow hard who is hard up on making controversy in places where there is no controversy. We have a GREAT set of coaches. he should let it go, but he can't because that makes him less important in his mind.

Preston gets no page hits from me. Even when he writes something good I keep from clicking it. Why the hell should anyone trust Preston over Bryne? Bryne does not have a single confirmed lie on the books. While Preston makes a habit of it. Mikey you ruined your own credibility by stirring up shit for so many years. I dont for one second believe this garbage.

Preston is an idiot. There is only one reason why Preston has a job - and EVERYBODY knows what that is. I grew up in the Baltimore of the 50s and 60s when the Sun had REAL sports journalists and people read the paper to gain a little bit of sports insight. Now the only readers the Sun can claim are the city's population of parakeets.

That guy got what he wanted.
More people mentioning his name.
Ignore it and it will hopefully go away.

The fact that 105.7 continually gives this clown airtime is what led me to turning it off completely months ago. Thank God for Sirius XM.
