I agree with your original post. However, I feel a more important issue is a revision to one of your statements -
"I can never get my head around someone claiming x player to be the greatest of all time with out first agreeing what "greatest" means." ;)

As I said, that's just me, I'm not getting into an argument about it. I'm not a stat man, I let my eyes make my decisions, and thus, not seeing someone, I can't comment.

Fair enough. And to be honest, the example I gave is from baseball, where stats do in fact tell 90% of the story. In football stats are far more dependent on other factors.

With the rule changes, the adding of penalties, the increase of games/season, the development of "ideal" playing conditions, the medical advances, the use of film now going to digital, the question on greatest QB can never really be answered. All the stats/records are going to be skewed toward the later players.... most touchdowns in a season? 16 game season has an unbelievable edge over 12 game season.
Same with most yards, TDs ..... If the greatest is based on that, just wait until CBs have to keep their hands on their heads until the ball is in the air rule in 2019 :D

Unitas, who some of us were around while he played, deserves at the very minimum "Best of the Era".... the only one close to him that I have seen is Peyton. I personally put him first but anyone who doesn't have him in their top 5, doesn't really know football history well enough

His argument was that Manning holds all the stats and records....

You cannot compare stats and records across generations. You can only compare a player's statistics with his contemporaries. Are Manning's statistics greater compared to his peers than Unitas' (or Montana's, Marino's, etc.) were when compared to guys who played back then? That would be the counterargument concerning statistics. Then, there is the intangible "winner/leader" angle - the guy who rises to the occasion. I doubt Manning is going to favor well n that regard.
