Re: Tyrod Taylor
A guy I'd keep my eye on is Bruce Gradkowski. Was the backup in Cincy, now with the Steelers, signed a 3 year deal. Yeah, Gino's older brother.
With them drafting Landry Jones, I wonder if he might not be a cut at somepoint. He'd be cheap, and he's decent enough to come in and hold his own. He probably can't start for you, but he can play a few games if Joe needs a few weeks to heal up.
I was really hoping we'd push to sign him last year, but Pittsburgh is his hometown team, so I think he preferred to sign there anyway. But if he was cut, I'm certain he'd love to join little bro on the team. Gino manages to dress Bruce's little daughter in Ravens stuff from time to time, fun rivalry between siblings..

Call me a Special Teams coach again. I dare you! I double dare you, MFer!

Re: Tyrod Taylor
The last time we did it was 2009, we had John Beck as the 3rd QB. This was during the time of the Emergency QB roster rule, where your Wildcat QB had to actually be your #2. Our strategy was Troy Smith would be our "Wildcat" option, and Jon Beck would be the guy to come in if Joe was actually knocked out of a game.
But yes, since then, it's been 2 QBs, because we don't want to "Waste" a roster spot..

Re: Tyrod Taylor
The Ravens should get a traditional back-up and see if they can't convert Tyrod into something else like the Patriots did when they drafted Julian Edelman.

Re: Tyrod Taylor
I like him too :)
Hah, seems an age ago Jamarcus Russell got benched and Gradowski rallied the Raiders, his teammates were mad about him. The Raiders then shocked the Steelers in a surprise win
The Steelers carry 3 QB's for as long as I remember though so maybe he'll be brought back.
I hope the FO check him out

Re: Tyrod Taylor
Tyrod isn't going anywhere. He's cheap now, he'll be cheap to re-sign*, he can finish a game if necessary, & adds a little change of pace--& the Ravens are going exactly nowhere without Flacco healthy for the bulk of the season, as we just saw.
* I would expect that once his contract is up, the Ravens will cut him in favor of a more conventional backup (CB) who they sign for next to no guaranteed $$. After week 1 of that season, once TT has drawn zero interest from the other 31 teams even at vet minimum, they will cut the CB (but tell him to stay close to the phone) & re-sign TT; then if Joe should get injured & need to sit out a few weeks, Tyrod will finish the game & the CB will be re-inked & elevated to emergency starter status.

Re: Tyrod Taylor
Tyrod is just fine.
QB's are a scarce commodity in the league. If you sign a "capable" QB to ride the bench, that's cap money that can be spent elsewhere.
Tyrod is cheap, knows the offense better than any they could bring in and can easily fill in for a few games if need be.

Re: Tyrod Taylor
Green Bay lost the game that Rodgers went down with Seneca Wallace. They started Wallace the next game, lost him for the season, and lost that game and the next with Scott Tolzien. After that they managed to go 2-2-1 against a mediocre schedule with Matt Flynn who began the year in Oakland then went to Buffalo before finding his way to the scrap heap.
It was a lucky break for the Packers to find a guy they had familiarity with, not a case of having the right backup in the first place. In most seasons (or if the Lions weren't so inept) they don't make the playoffs. BTW they were just 2-5-1 in games without Rodgers including the one in which he was lost. Tyrod could probably pull that off, especially against that schedule.
I think Foles was drafted to be a starter (potentially) one day, and it turns out Chip Kelly's wishy-washy-ness over the starting QB in camp was more justified than many thought at the time.
When you have a franchise QB, you pretty much have to concede that without him the season is over. When your QB is good but injury prone (Cutler, Vick, Schaub) you have to be a bit more thoughtful when filling the backup role. That's the least of the Ravens' concerns right now.

Re: Tyrod Taylor
I personally don't feel Tyrod Taylor is a NFL QB, period. It is not good enough to just be a fill in; you have to fill in and win. I also believe it is better to have a back up that mirrors the starting QB. Joe and Tyrod bring different skill sets. If his contract is up, the Ravens should go to the draft and find someone that may fall to the 5th or 6th round again.
As far as Tyrod being cheap, don't forget as a 4th year veteran, the minimum salary is much higher than a rookie QB signed at the minimum.
