I never did understand that.

White person assaults a black person and it is a hate crime.

Black person assaults a white person and it is just a run of the mill assault.

That's not quite true.

The races of the actors in a crime need to do something overt for it to be considered a hate crime.

If I punch a black guy, it's assault. If I punch a black guy and drop the N bomb as I'm doing it, it's now a hate crime. Same dynamic applies if the races are reversed.

FTR, I think hate crimes are redundant and unnecessary.
