But support for a third party is at a high never seen before.

It's going to happen eventually. Just a matter of how soon, IMO.
The article addresses that. When this happens we eventually settle back into a new two party equilibrium, typically with one of the old parties dying and being replaced by a new one.

How can an 8 month old article address a poll number that occurred 5 days ago?

It doesn't need to address that poll specifically. It addresses historical precedent. When a third party has gained footing in the past, it has been at the expense of another, resulting in a return to a two party system.

Having a sustained 3 party system after a shake-up in the political balance is historically unprecedented. That doesn't mean it's impossible, but my guess is if we do have a 3rd party emerge, history will repeat itself.

Not sure if a joke or not or how much legs this rumor (?) has, but if true it might be absolutely best for both parties.

Somewhere along the line, Republicans became less known for their fiscal views and more for the extremely vocal minority that won't shut up about hot button issues related to sex, gender, marriage, the Bible, what-have-you.

Republican Party has its hands full catering to the whims of that group. Especially when the group can't even see it's hurting Republicans when it acts crazy.
