    Re: Predict the WR corps

Just as many here have predicted all offseason, asking Jacoby Jones to step up and be the #2 WR in addition to his RS duties has yielded very poor returns (no pun intended) thus far. It appears to me that Jones has been hesitant and a step slow returning the ball in the preseason so far, and his struggles as a WR are well documented.

Houston also watched Jones struggle when he was asked to be more than a return specialist and situational receiver and that led them to cut him. Why are we re-learning that lesson? Jones should be the RS and situational #3/#4 who comes in for streak and clear-out routes in certain packages.

My WR depth chart is #1 Smith/#2 ????/#3 Stokley-OR-Jones (package dependent)/#4 Thompson (if healthy)/#5 Brown/#6 Mellette. LaQuan is the top super-sub to make the team if anybody ahead of him gets IR'd, but I think we can get adequate ST play from other guys to replace that element of his game.

Stokley and Jones, for different reasons, should not be every-down #2 WRs. Somebody from the 4-6 spots needs to step up and be the #2 WR against Denver in week 1. I'm excited by Thompson, Brown, and Mellette all for different reasons, but I don't know if the coaching staff is going to step up and make the call to demote Jones after he's been the #2 WR all through camp.

We learned that lesson all the way to a SuperBowl Victory! Even if Jones never plays another productive down in the NFL at the WR position... He did enough to make his signing worthwhile. Not that I want that... I want him to be a productive WR on this team for the next few years.

    Re: Predict the WR corps

Doss has had boneheaded plays in every single preseason game, plays that a 3rd year supposed up-and-comer should not be making.

According to this, both coaches and players think he is "soft":
    http://russellstreetreport.com/its-t...-to-toss-doss/

and judging by his play, I'd have to agree.

I just hope vanity/pride doesn't get in the way and our coaches/FO can come to terms with cutting this guy loose despite his draft level.

He is dead weight. He doesn't even have any standout physical characteristics. He brings basically nothing to the table. He was supposed to have hands like glue, but I guess not when surrounded by live NFL defenses. Without those supposed hands, what else does he have to offer? They were his only differentiating factor.

    Smith
    Stokley
    Jones
    Brown
    Mellette
    Williams

    IR Deonte

    OUT: Streeter, Doss

By the way Harbaugh said last week Deonte would be re-evaluated after the Panthers game, and they knew all along his injury would be a multi-week deal.

I don't think you need to cut Doss. If they could get a former mid round pick for David Reed, I have to believe they could get SOMETHING from some team out there, even just a conditional pick, for Doss. It's better than outright cutting him. But one way or the other, he has to go.

I think you're missing bmorecareful's point. JJones is fine as a situational WR and primary return man, and that's how he was used last season. Asking him to do more than that subtracts from his contributions in both areas. The Texans found out that he wasn't a #2WR. The Ravens need to come to grips with that as well.

The Ravens traded away the 2nd best option for kickoff returns, so there is no way JJones is going to be cut, especially with DThompson hurt. It would be ideal for Marlon Brown to ascend into the #2WR position and allow JJones to do what he does best (like last season), but I think that's wishful thinking to expect a UDFA to suddenly do that. It happens and I would love to see it, but it's not likely.

I personally think the Ravens will not get rid of Jacoby for any reason save a trade package involving a much better WR.

We already lost Pitta and Boldin. We BARELY have a respectable corps WITH Jacoby, a guy who has proved vital in many ways. I really don't see the sense in trading him at all unless, like I just said, a really attractive trade is on the table.

    Re: Predict the WR corps

    1. Torrey Smith
    2. Jacoby Jones (Really don't want him as a #2 because we need him on special teams and not sure he has the hands)
    3. Brandon Stokely (solid 3rd or 4th receiver. Can move the chains ans sure hands)
    4. Deonte Thompson (is faster than Torrey and Jacoby)
    5. Laquan Williams (to valuable on special teams)
    6. Marlon Brown (Not sure if he's the real deal, but he had the best preason performance so far with game 3)

    - Aarron Mellette to the practice squad
    - Tandon Doss cut
    - Tommy Streeter cut

I would be good with this.

BTW, whoever said Jacoby Jones is getting cut, is crazy.... And Rainey is/was the 2nd Best return man... not Reed.

It's apparent to me that the team really misread and mishandled the WR position. They were fortunate to have been able to recover some with Stokely who looks like he is going to be a god send in the slot, but it's just weird to me that some things that seemed to be common sense, the team didn't see.

It reminds me of how long it took the team to realize that Cam had worn out his time here.
Although Walsh's system of offense can compensate for lack of talent; however, defense is a different story. According to Walsh, talent on defense was essential and could not be compensated for. What did Walsh do in 1981? He acquired physical and talented players on defense.

At least Reed did something on Special Teams. Doss is a failed WR, period. I would be shocked if any team gave anything for him. Oh, I'd love to see the Ravens get say a 7th round draft choice, but the odds IMO are against any bid for this flop of a 4th rounder... Bc
