I agree. If the Ravens have the opportunity to add a bonifide #2 WR and cut Jacoby for cap space, Doss' value in the return game (and thus, to the team) increases greatly.

Brian McFarland ‏ @ RavensSalaryCap17m With Clark and Stokley now officially on the books, Ravens are $4,029,459 under the Cap.

Brian McFarland ‏ @ RavensSalaryCap 21m As speculated yesterday, Dallas Clark got same 1-yr, $1.005M deal as Stokley ($940K base, $65K roster bonus). Will count $620K against Cap

Maybe Ravor can chime in on this but how does cutting Jacoby (or any player) create cap space?

It is not unprecedented for a guy "running with the 1's" to be cut, not even particularly uncommon if there are injuries at the position, and there are right now with Thompson in the tub. Obviously Shiancoe is not actually the top guy on the depth chart, but neither is Doss. Shiancoe is the #2 TE and Doss is (at best) the #3 WR, so they're essentially similar guys in terms of depth chart positioning.

Doss has reportedly been playing pretty much exclusively in the slot with the 1st team. If they felt so good about him in that position why did they just go out and sign a pure slot guy? Again, I've never said that Doss getting cut was LIKELY, only that it wouldn't really surprise me. The odds are still probably against it, but when you're talking about the 4th or 5th WR (which is where Doss very well might end up if Stokley wins the #3 job and Reed and Williams keep impressing,) by definition you're talking about a guy who isn't a lock.

BTW we're all aware Doss is on the PR depth chart. In that respect, he's similar to Reed--both are 2nd team returners--but the issue is that he doesn't play on any 0THER ST units. LaQuan plays on all 4 ST units and David Reed plays on at least 2 of them AND is a backup returner. To my knowledge Doss does not play any coverage units or the KO unit at all, only backup PR. If you think that's not a significant factor to the personnel decision, especially for a 4th or 5th WR, Marcus Smith says hello.
Well, in all fairness, Shiancoe has been running with the 1's by default...if Dickson were healthy then Shiancoe wouldn't see many reps at all with the 1's.

I also think that Clark was specifically brought in because Dickson is probably going to be out for a while. They were thinking about signing Shiancoe before Pitta even got hurt (or, I would assume so based him Shiancoe visiting practices).

Similarly with Stokley, had Deonte Thompson not gotten hurt, would he have been signed? I can't really say, but it sure seemed like they were willing to roll with who they had.

In order for them to part ways with Jacoby 2 things need to happen:

    1) Deonte Thompson needs to be healthy because they like having that other receiver option who can be a burner. Jacoby is arguably faster than Torrey, or at least as fast. Thompson is said to be the fastest guy on the team and if he is healthy and can hang as a perimeter receiver and replicate what Jacoby has done, then the argument to part ways with Jacoby makes sense.

    2) They need to figure out if they have anyone else who can return kick-offs and punts. Asa Jackson was supposed to be competing for that spot and David Reed displayed some decent kick return skills before his days of fumble-itis against the Seahawks. I don't know that Reed can return punts though. Webb can return punts, but do you really want your top corner coming off of an ACL tear returning punts? Probably not.

I think the fact that they don't really have a great answer for a return specialist keeps Jacoby on the team. However, I do think that his salary may become an issue and I don't think that Jacoby should be the #2 receiver. He is a decent player, but he has inconsistent hands and doesn't run very good routes.

What do you know, the front office is going after former Colts! Kind of ironic if you ask me. IMO it's a good signing in terms of adding depth, if Clark has staying power. He was great with Peyton Manning at QB but has not been a big role player since. If he does make the team and play, Joe should consider Clark as a target who is capable of stepping up.

Release of Jones would mean at $3M Cap rebate, but the cost of the guy replacing him would currently be $480K, so there's a net cap savings of $2.52M

Could we get some cap back from McClain on an injury settlement?

I thought I read somewhere that if a player is cut after a certain date, the money is owed in full to the player and its dead money on the cap?

Of course they did just write a $1 million dollar bonus check to Jacoby back in March so cutting him now would have to sting a bit.

He has a very valuable role on this team, but being the #2 WR isn't it.

Jacoby's returns were vital to our season and super bow run. I doubt they cut him.

I don't see it either unless there is a reason to, and there isn't.
