    Just like any law, it depends on the state and they all have a statute of limitations on criminal charges (except for murder).

    The statute on theft will run out, but the property remains stolen property. You can't be in possession of stolen property (knowingly) and claim protection under the statute. You'd still be in possession of it.

    Statute of limitations in CA (where BA lives and where the ring was left at the bar) for receiving stolen property is three years.

    Only remedy after three years is civil court and as states earlier, the owner would have know you have it.

    Pretty sure that selling the stolen ring would start a new time limit as the seller would be knowingly selling stolen property, which is a different crime from the actual theft.
