OT: James Gandolfini Dead

I originally thought that Tony was killed in the last episode, especially after the talk between him and Bobby on the boat a few episodes back. However, the idea that you have to infer someone being killed doesn't follow Chase's vision of the series. There were a ton of murders throughout the 86 episodes, and they all were explicitly shown, you never had to piece anything together. I think the final scene dealt with Tony's paranoia, things had finally been resolved with the NY family, but Tony's mind could never be put at ease. He was constantly monitoring the front door because it was in his DNA as a mob boss to always be on the lookout, he could never shut it off. The lyric in the Journey song in the background summed it up, "it goes on and on and on and on..." No one in the restaurant looked threatening or were shown to have a weapon, plus it wouldn't have made sense to kill someone in a crowded restaurant in front of a bunch of witnesses. At least that's how I look at it now.

how many of the hits went down in the middle of busy restaurants and stores? Most that I remember...

The only thing that makes me question if he is dead is the song, why did he pick that song? It has to mean something

Tony doesn't look paranoid at all. That's the point. It's the first time in the 86 episodes he's letting his guard down.

As each person walks in, they cut to his face and he's not phased in the least, even when members only jacket guy walks in. It's a quick glance then back down to his menu. It isn't until the last shot of his face does he look concerned.

There's also the concept that I've seen surrounding the "never hear it happen" theme throughout that season. Numerous times during that season, stuff happens to a bunch of characters and they never heard it, particularly the guy that's killed at the dinner table with Silvio. Silvio is covered in blood before the shot is ever heard (and, technically, you don't see that person get shot; just the blood). Phil Leotardo never hears it happen either. He's shot from the side.

Tony still looks at the front door each time it opens (multiple times.) I know he's anticipating Meadow arriving, but he's facing forward, fixated on everyone who's coming in, and also at the guy sitting at the counter. When the guy goes to the bathroom, Tony is still eyeing him.

At least with the guy getting shot next to Silvio, you see everyone's facial expressions and blood first, it's easy to figure what happened. With Phil, a car tire moves toward his head while he's laying on the ground and the car hops up like it hit a speed bump. With those 2 scenes, you completely understand someone was murdered.

No way he's fixated. Quite the opposite. Yes, he looks up but when you're expecting someone and the bell on the door rings, you're going to look up. Once his family was there, he does not look up anymore. For example, the two black guys walk in, we are shown that they walk in but Tony doesn't even look up at them. When the guy in the USA hat walks in, he looks up, but then immediately goes back to the juke box, not giving any more attention other than that quick glace up.

And Tony doesn't eye the Members Only guy. He doesn't pay him any mind when he walks by to the bathroom.

But hell, that's what is so brilliant about the show. The fact we're even having this discussion!

Glancing at someone is natural and, IMO, doesn't equal keeping an eye on him.

For your scenario to be true, we'd have to believe the members only guy wasn't relevant at all even though Chase uses him prominently in the scene. That's not like Chase.

And we'd also have to ignore the boat conversation. Foreshadowing is rampant throughout the series. That's right up Chase's alley.
