    Re: McKinnie returns.

You know, McKinney could have drawn this out and tried to milk a little more up front any number of big spender teams - especially ones like the Cowgirls or Miami who's been throwing around money. Instead, he comes back to a place that's been on his ass, negotiated him out of a mil or so at the last minute and lost the two guys who were lobbying for the team to pick him up when he first came here. I wonder if winning a championship, and the experience leading up to it helped him screw his head on right?

I'd be willing to bet it's structured so it's essentially a 1 year deal with an option for next year. I'd have to think Ozzie looks at this signing as buying him one more year to find a young LT option whose initials are not K.O.

Man I am loving this. Given what else was out there and given that he knows this team we couldn't have asked for much more. Even the money is not too too bad. Obviously he isnt long term solution but he's still got at least a couple years in the tank (provided he stays focused) and should really help Joe turn it up that much more. And if that's the case maybe we don't even need that vet possession WR. Give a great QB time and he makes decent WRs look good and sometimes great. Maybe Joe with this fortified line can do that for Doss or Dionte or whoever.

Sounds crazy but this team might be right on a par with last year's only younger and faster. Oz is doing it yet again.

Now we know they really did want him back. Ozzie probably had a check with me deal with McKinnie. He went out and got his best offer and then gave Ozzie the chance to beat it.

Yep. Sometimes you lose a player this way: Reed, Jarrett Johnson, etc.

But it makes Newsome one of the most respected GMs in the league among players and agents.

Speaking of debt and living pay check to pay check.

Remember Hartwell's big pay day when he left here?

He went bankrupt and foreclosed on his $2M beach front estate. A lot of old
ball players hocked their SB rings to get money. The pawn shop in Vegas
has an entire case of original SB rings sold over the years.

As Brooks Robinson said years ago when he filed bankruptcy, no one ever
educated ball players in money. Johnny U filed bankruptcy too.

The Ravens picked him up a couple years ago after the Vikings cut him for weight and bad workout ethic. I remember the board being real worried about who was going to be our LT back then also, and the signing being a surprise as well. Many posters thought his contract would be incentive laden in order to motivate him.

I wonder if anyone knows what incentives were on his previous contract, and how many he actually achieved?
    Twenty years of Cheers.
Thanks Baltimore Ravens Fans - You're the Best!

Actually, I think the league (and maybe the players union) holds annual seminars for the rookie players on all aspects of being a professional athlete - including financial management.

Whether they listen or not is another story...

In 2009 SI had a story that said over 75% of retired NFL players end up declaring bankruptcy. Even if that number is high it's still a very large amount.

Yea, I think they do but Brooks said that 40 years ago when his sporting goods store
    went out of business.

Arty Donovan sure knew how to make money back in the days when players didn't
make money. A fan loved him so much he left him two bars. He managed one and
    his wife managed the other.

He said his wife was a fianancial whiz and turned the bars into the Maryland
Country Club they still own in Towson. She later taught financial course at
    Princeton.

One time Arty fell in its swimming pool when he was cleaning it while empty and
it took the entire fire dept to get him out-lol.

Not surprising at all. ESPN did a 30 for 30 documentary on pro athletes going broke. Definitely an interesting program if you get a chance to watch it.
