    WRs

I think having a thread per position (WR) or position unit (DL, OL) would be a good thing, sooooo...here's my post from exactly a month ago.

So from the perspective of fit or "what I think we need", my WR board is below.
Assumption 1: Boldin and JJ12 will be back and in their 2012 positions (slot and #3/X respectively)

    1st - No one
    2nd - Quinton Patton LATech
3rd - Studman Bailey WVU, Markus Wheaton ORSt, DeAndre Hopkins Clemson, Tavarres King UGA (all four in the top-half of the 3rd)
    4th - Uzoma Nwachukwu TX A&M
5th - Chad Bumphis MSST, Darius Johnson SMU
Other than moving Nwachukwu to 5th round value, nothing has changed my mind over the past month. What I have considered though is moving up in the 3rd for Studman, and up in the 5th for Bumphis. The reason I like these two guys is that I feel that both could play the slot or out-wide opposite Torrey, if needed. This is very important IMO, when considering the possibility of Boldin (however accurate) departing in 2013, and JJ12 in 2014.

While neither Studman nor Bumphis has preferrable size, both have excellent feet, very good hands, technical intelligence, and use their bodies extremely well when it comes to putting themselves in between the defender and the ball. There's waaay more film out there on Studman than Bumphis, and if you watch Studman, he demonstrates excellent body positioning time-and-time again when the ball is in the air against taller defenders.

Both guys remind me of CAR's Steve Smith but in different ways; Bumphis, more physically than technically. Just the opposite for Studman.

    Re: WRs

I just can't see a scenario where Hopkins drops into round 3.

My WR rankings: (overall...having nothing to do with the Ravens)

    1. Cordarelle Patterson
    2. DeAndre Hopkins
    3. Justin Hunter
    4. Da'Rick Rogers
    5. Tavon Austin
    6. Robert Woods
    7. Stedman Bailey
    8. Quinton Patton
    9. Markus Wheaton
    10. Kenny Stills

    Re: WRs

Looking at what Caldwell did in Indianapolis for a picture of the 2013 Ravens offense, the WRs "played sides". Wayne was always the LWR/X receiver, Harrison/later Garcon was always the RWR/Z receiver. Torrey has usually been the RWR in this offense and I'd keep him there to give him a little more space to avoid the jam at the line and to make better use of his excellent run blocking.

I think Doss is going to be the Y receiver of the future. He has the catch radius and body control to move the chains against the zone, and in man he needs to face a smaller, less physical CB to win. That screams "slot receiver" to me, so I don't really see the Ravens having a great NEED for a slot guy. That de-emphasizes the slot guys in this draft, apart from perhaps Tavon Austin who is such a dynamic talent that you just take him and then design the offense around him.

To me, it's the LWR/Reggie Wayne role that they really need somebody. I just can't say with confidence that we have a starting caliber prospect at that position--Jacoby Jones' best role is return specialist and occasional package WR. We need a fluid athlete with elite route-running precision who has at least ENOUGH physical tools to stand a chance against a team's top CBs. Who are those guys in this draft? Here's some guys I like to be future NFL X receivers in each round:

1st - DeAndre Hopkins 2nd - Justin Hunter, Da'Rick Rogers, Terrence Williams, Robert Woods 3rd - Markus Wheaton, Stedman Bailey, Quinton Patton 4th - Marquess Wilson, Cobi Hamilton

Good idea BPR on the position thread

Provided we retain Boldin i still lean towards going with the WR's we have another year. Obviously Torrey and Q would be the starters. I expect Torrey to take another step as well as Caldwell finding more ways to get him the ball. Jacoby would return sharing the #3 role w/Doss and clear out responsibilities. Doss i think is a guy that will take another step as well now that he's accustomed to getting snaps and knows what he has to do to be productive when he's in there.

My main reason is i want to see Deonte Thompson and Tommy Streeter in Caldwell's system. Im not saying you bank on them but im intrigued in their potential going forward and think it's worth a year. If neither(Doss, Thompson, Streeter)take a step you take a WR high next year when you have less holes to fill.

When i look at this class i think most of the guys that project as legit outside WR's will go in the first 3 to 4 rounds and i think we just have so many things to accomplish i wouldnt like to go that route unless it's just great value. Anybody pass those rounds would beg the question, is he better then what we have?

    Re: WRs

I'm not a WR guy at all, don't watch much on these guys, but one guy that doesn't get mentioned here much is Quinton Patton, he'd be an absolute steal at 62, this guy was LA Techs offense last year.

I agree on Patton, think he's a stud, reminds of Reggie Wayne....I think Chris Harper in the 4th is good value, very Boldin like with better long speed.

I have no earthly idea where guys will be drafted. Honestly, I don't care.
My list based upon my own determined value, complementary fit for the Ravens, and needed skill(s) for the Ravens.
Right now, our WRs struggle with separation more than anything else IMO. So that factor as a "needed skill" is weighed heavily compared to speed, for example.

For "determined value", I balance college production, the various skills of the position, size/speed and player dynamics.
Player dynamics is much higher for Patterson than Woods. Slightly higher for Patton than Rogers. Only slightly higher for Austin than Bailey.

For "complementary fit", Austin is not included on my list, b/c I don't know if Caldwell sees him as a fit or not. (However, I would make him fit if I was the OC.) As a fan, I think Austin has top-5 value b/c his athletic skill-set is incredibly unique. Still, I don't pretend to know what Caldwell's draft philosophy for WRs is by simply being aware of who IND drafted (Garcon, Collie, White, etc.) and who they didn't (DJax, Cruz, E Sanders, etc.). Therefore, Austin is not on my list.

The factor that has the heaviest weight for my 2012 evaluations is "the ability to create separation from footwork", closely followed by "...separation from route running". This has been the case since October. So in the case of Hopkins and ohhh...let's say Allen, I'm not impressed with their footwork like some folks may be, so they are penalized in my system. In fact, for 2013, guys that demonstrate average feet AND average route running don't make my list at all. For 2014, that could change, if I decide to weight my evaluation factors differently.

I trumpted Patton back in the late fall. He's the most balanced and completely skilled WR in the class. He is my #1. I don't have a 1st round value tag on him b/c of his shortcomings in demonstrated high-pointing ability, and breakaway speed. Again, this is my own system.

    Re: WRs

Soooo...we have Austin, Hopkins, Patton and Bumphis on the "Q replacement" short list?
    Did I overlook anyone?

What's the better assumption on reloading the slot position?
    a. We replace with a tough, solid-bodied guy with strong hands
    b. We replace him with a "traditional" quick, and can get some serious YAC guy
    c. Tandon Doss
    d. Deonte Thompson
    e. Something else

Agreed. That dude is a beast. I would love it for him to replace Boldin. Similar builds.
