Re: $10 million a Year for Kruger

No way is Kruger on the Ravens next year. I agree that Upshaw can handle the duties at OLB, but the Ravens will probably want to add another pass rusher. One guy I really like is Tank Carradine out of FSU. He tore his ACL in November so he will probably drop a bit in the draft, but should be ready to go by the time training camp roles around. I could see him as a situational pass rusher, much like Kruger was used last year.

Tank Carradine is a freak, and is going to go a lot higher than people think IMO. I'd love it if we got him at 32, he has some Aldon Smith in him.

You think he will still be a first round pick with that ACL injury? I was thinking that the Ravens might have a shot at him if they traded up in the second round.

Don't mind this. Ellerbe, McKinney, and Ed should be our priorities in that order

Been saying it and saying it, whatever teams signs him is going to be disappointed a year from now and wishing they could get out of paying a 6 sack player 16 sack player money. I'm just glad it won't be the Ravens.

    Good post and spot on.

Kruger has developed into a very good player. He's stronger rusher than passer than against the run, but it's hardly uncommon even for very good players to be far better in one aspect of the game than in other parts. JJ was better against the run than rushing the passer, for instance.

Kruger isn't a keeper for the Ravens because they have Suggs, however. Suggs is paid. It's a done deal. If both Suggs and Kruger were free agents this off-season, the Ravens would have a tough choice to make (proven commodity over youth), but since they have Suggs in hand they can't afford to keep Kruger barring his doing something really perverse like taking a way-below-market contract to stay with the Ravens. As fans, we'd love it. The NFLPA would be pissed. And Kruger would be an idiot.

It's a weak free agent year, which helps push up his value because he has developed into a good player who can do a lot for a team. He's not horrible in coverage (he's not great, either). He's fairly good against the run. He has the ability to be an every-down OLB. I don't think he's going to be a Pro Bowl staple wherever he goes, but he's the best available OLB, I believe, for those teams who think signing one is a key move for them this offseason.

  8. Re: $10 million a Year for Kruger

If we were to decided that we need to retain Kruger, given the money he'll likely be offered, I think our best bet would be to pin him with the non-exclusive franchise tag. That way we can pay him for a year with a total that would likely probably be less than $10m (I'm guessing, I don't know what that tag on an outside linebacker would be this year), and then we can use 2013 to see whether he builds on 2012 or reverts to the mean. What we don't want to do is hand him a 4-5 year contract with a big bonus that averages $10m a year.

So, my guess would be that by the time the franchise tags are all applied or not applied, we'll pretty much know if Kruger is coming back next year, barring the market for him inexplicably collapsing. The non-exclusive franchise tag here is a big advantage for us if want to keep him and are able to pay him anything near market value.

If we don't feel we can, then we won't, and once he hits the open market, a team with tons of cap room will sign him, and it won't necessarily be a bad move for said team. Some of these teams are $30-40m beneath the cap and need to hit at least the payroll floor. So a long-term deal for a guy who is relatively young coming off a big season isn't as big of a risk for them as it is for a team like Baltimore with less cap space. To the Clevelands of the world, they might be $35m under, sign Kruger and be $25m under, and even if he takes a step backwards they at least have a solid outside linebacker and plenty of cap room, it's not financially crippling to them at all, and the upside is that they might have one of the league's premiere pass rushers if Kruger picks up where he left off this past season or gets better.

I mean, it's something like this. If your personal finances are tight, buying even a DVD player or something might be a big deal that you have to look at your budget and weigh against other things. If you're a billionaire, you might go out and buy three Internet connected Blu-Ray players just because without a second thought. Right now, the Ravens' finances are tight. The Browns and other teams have tons of money to play with. There are deals that are not going to make sense for us that'll be excellent deals for them.

Kruger had a good run but for the most part i saw O-lineman fling him into the backfield a lot and become a non-factor on a tackle or sack. he picked up one sack against Oakland when the QB fell down behind the center and Krueger happened to be the first one to touch him so he got the sack. good luck, make your money and return a good compensatory pick.

Re: $10 million a Year for Kruger

Maybe I skimmed this thread too fast, so apologies if I missed it, but isn't this discussion of Kruger's likely contract value overlooking an important factor? That is, supply and demand.

Even after the Bengals franchised Michael Johnson, I think I recall that there are a decent number of free agents who could be OLB/DE pass rusher types.

Older guys like Abraham and Freeney -- which teams could see as short term stopgaps who they would supplement with a young draft pick, rather than throw money at Kruger if the money gets silly. I think Shaun Phillips is done in San Diego and on the market as another older OLB who is coming off a decent bounce-back year.

Also, I think Conner Barwin is out there, and he could be good value coming off an injury. Barwin only 26 years old, so unlike Freeney and Abraham he is a longer term solution more comparable to Kruger. In 2011, he had 11.5 sacks but just 3 sacks in 2012 after an injury issue and JJ Watt taking over the role of pass rusher. Still, I'll take Barwin's track record over Kruger I think.

Anthony Spencer is a guy I loved coming out of Purdue and I think he's in his walk year with the Cowboys. He's more of an all around player, though not really a 3-4 OLB.

Clif Avril I think is a much better player than Kruger so for the kind of money people are talking about, I'm thinking teams go after him with Kruger as a fall back option.

Besides, if I'm the Ravens I am more interested in cheap veteran who can tackle and play the pass than I am in a sack specialist. Daryl Smith of the Jags Michael Boley, who is 30, had 92 tackles for the Giants in just 13 games last year, both fit the bill and would be smarter investments.

Spencer has just been tagged now as well so Kruger is the probably the no.1 pas rusher available.
