Re: OT: Remembering Earl Weaver...Rest in Peace

My first Orioles memory, 1969, I was six and we were at a day game in Memorial Stadium. My dad had just bought me popcorn and in those days it came in an orange square cardboard tube with one end closed that you could later turn into a "megaphone". Anyone else remember those?

Anyway, Earl got ripped about a bad call and came out and started yelling at the ump and of course the crowd goes crazy. So I asked my dad why "that man" was yelling at the umpire. My dad said, "Because he's smarter than everyone else and he wants to make sure they know it." Earl got tossed from the game, and this is one of those rare memories that is as vivid for me today as if it happened yesterday.

Maybe it was that orange, Orioles popcorn megaphone that makes it stand out for me. I loved that team.

    Classic Earl!

    Warning: Language unsuitable for children

(The ump is pretty hilarious also)

He was actually ejected from both games of a doubleheader 3 times.
"A lot" is a two word expression denoting a great deal or greatly, as in "I like sunshine a lot." "Alot" is a lovable imaginary grammar monster. You can love a lot; you can love an alot; you can love alots a lot; but they are not the same thing.

Too young to remember him but my grandmother (RIP) put a jinx on the O's for firing him, so he must have been a good dude! RIP Earl.

    OT: Earl Weaver Passes Away

Re: OT: Earl Weaver Passes Away

A bonafide Baltimore legend has passed.

Earl was responsible for a lot of great memories at Memorial. Thank you very much sir.

I'll never forget we had to win our last 4 games in the final homestand of the season at Memorial, head to head, to pass the division leading Milwaukee Brewers. We won 3 but came up short on the final game, which was Earl's last as Orioles's manager (first retirement). The series was incredibly exciting, but losing the last game in a last ditch bid for an improbable comeback didn't seem to sting that badly. The entire Stadium stayed as Baltimore Fans cheered on Earl. Howard Cosell chronicled the moment and proclaimed the Baltimore Orioles as the finest organization in MLB.

Thanks Earl. RIP, and don't be cussin' out the Umpire up there hear it?!
    Twenty years of Cheers.
Thanks Baltimore Ravens Fans - You're the Best!
