They are officially on Ravens IR and will most likley get one more shot next year in camp. They both showed some promise in practice and Burgess got some good snaps in last year. Daniels actually looked like a monster in shorts and T shirt during OTAs.
Turns out it was innacurate reporting. They were exposed to the other NFL teams by placing them on IR for a day, but no takers.
There was actually a chance the same thing could have happened to Devin Holley from the Clowns, but he was scheduled to be a starting CB. they exposed him in a similar way when he blew out his knee, but if no one took him, it was very unlikley anyone would claim Daniels or Burgess at this point.
Per The Sun :
Let me begin by offering a mea culpa to a note I wrote yesterday. Contrary to what I wrote, linebacker Prescott Burgess and running back P.J. Daniels have not been released from the team. In fact, they are are still members of the Ravens at this moment.
The confusion lies in the injury-waiver process. According to a team spokesman, the Ravens placed Burgess (broken left wrist) and Daniels (separated shoulder) on the injury-waiver list, which -- for one day -- allowed the other 31 teams in the league to put in a waiver claim for either player.
Since no team claimed Burgess and Daniels, the rights of both players were returned to the Ravens, who promptly placed the pair on injured reserve. Thus, Burgess and Daniels are still with the Ravens. Again, my apologies.
So why the dance step? and not just straight to IR move?
Have to be done that way? or is there some roster implication I'm missing?
Maybe allows activation later? or cap relief? I'm not clear on the why of this move involving waiver.
Yes, it has to be done that way. They did the same thing with Sypneiwski and Kuhn. A non-vested veteran (ie less than 4 years experience) must be placed on waivers prior to going on IR. But, since an injured player can't be released, they are "waived-injured". Once they clear waivers, they then go on IR and can stay there or the team can work out an injury settlement and release them.
So, it's still possible that the team could release them (with an injury settlement) at some point.
