For all the pseudo-libertarian self-reliant macho men
Some beautiful prose from from Whole Foods comment section. Pretty much says it perfectly.
I AM AN AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE SHILL
This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration.
At the appropriate time as regulated by the US congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and tTechnology and the US Naval Observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads build by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issed by the Federal Reserve Bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school.
Oh it continues...
After spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, enjoying another two meals which again do not kill me because of the USDA, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to ny house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshal's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all it's valuables thanks to the local police department.
I then log on to the internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on freerepublic.com and fox news forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right.
Bring it home my man...
The only reason government doesn't work is because conservative Republican administrations defunded and/or patronage staffed them with people with ties to special business interests: to wit the last FDA, Dept of Interior and Agriculture under Bush. No one seems to have a problem with pumping over $500Bil to the Defense Department which last I hear is a socialized entity.
Re: For all the pseudo-libertarian self-reliant macho men
You're right.
Ad hominem attacks do say it perfectly -- the debate is lost and your side lost it. Taken straight from Saul Alinsky's playbook.
Project much, Galen? Your posts have made good fodder for a Dr of psychology friend of mine, teaching at a college in MD.
Keep em coming, Mr. I-overestimated-the-mandate. ;)

Funny how those conservatives who post here, and the majority of the other conservatives in the country never answer the question that's being asked here. They simply rant and rave about how we are becoming socialists. I repeat... do they not understand what's being said here?, or do they choose to ignore the fact that there are MANY socialist programs in our country, that they use, subscribe to, and enjoy... But try to in any small way socialize ANYTHING ELSE ...like medicine... which SHOULD be the first thing that is socialized... and they go off the deep end? 'Splain that, Lucy!
Re: For all the pseudo-libertarian self-reliant macho men
It's not liek the Connies don't want the government to exist at all, jsut radically reduce in size. State Governments should be given back power. Obviously there are some things that a national government must provide us with(safety, space research, etc) and many others state governements(water, electricity, etc). We simply don't want the government's hand in everything. IT's not that hard to comprehend.

Nothing personal, Galen, this is about the post and not you, but what a load of complete crapola and so intellectually vapid it is amazing it had enough weight to stick to the screen and not blow away.
First, no way this writer is a conservative.
Electricity is generated by FOR PROFIT power companies who have a monopoly (and that is ending) because of necessity. This is a case where regulation is necessary by government because historically speaking we couldn't have competition in power distribution (or generation, historically, but as noted that is changing).
The water he showered in could have just as easily come from a well. But again, due to the impossibility of having multiple water distributors a monopoly is a necessity and therefore regulation. In his case it is a government run monopoly, A LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
The channel I got my weather from is not FCC regulated, it is a for profit weather channel that has launched its own satellites. I receive this channel via satellite TV, also launched privately.
What did people eat before the FDA? Much healthier food without perservatives and hormone injected meats, etc.
How did people keep time before the government began keeping official time?
I am not going to bother to go on, I will just end with this from Thomas Jefferson. The government that governs least, governs best.
Note he didn't say "The government that doesn't exist, governs best." We know there are necessary government functions. Police, courts, defense, federal travel systems, etc. What is not necessary are government retirement systems, government medical systems, etc. These are all bankrupt and quickly sucking this country into a hole we will never recover from.
Did you read where SS may be in the red in 2 years? I think we will have enough of a rebound to make it another 6-8 years. Perhaps if we can get this healthcare done and start killing off old people we can hold off the impending SS and Medicare doom a few extra years.
Over $50 trillion. That is how much we owe in UNFUNDED SS and Medicare expenses in the future. Right now we are using the surplus SS funds to run government. When it and Medicare go in the red we will have nothing left from the general fund to pay anything except interest on the debt, SS and Medicare obligations.
Let's not forget the now $11+ trillion in actual debt we have that is climbing by the second.
Hey, let's spend more and pretend none of this is happening. If we took all the money from the top 1% of the people in this country and left them flat broke we could get another 6 months or so!
Math can't be changed. It is what it is. Even if you pretend that it isn't.
