Re: Camp notes ~ daily updates
Not surprised David Reed may get an injury settlement and then released. He hasn't contributed as a receiver and has been passed by Doss and LaQuan and now Jones on the depth chart and as a kick return specialist he won't be able to beat out Jacoby Jones or Asa Jackson most likely because he can't get on the field.
Upshaw at 285lbs? Is that fact or speculation? Just a month ago he was around 275lbs and looking to drop down to 265...what happened there? Is that by design?

It's what was shared with me by a team source.
Re: Camp notes ~ daily updates
and we who were scratching our heads at upshaw failing the conditioning test first time around were BLASTED for overreacting. That combined with him being 285 explains a bit. Still not looking over the ledge, but that explains a bit.
That said, if he's impressing with his coverage at 285, why not keep him there? Bigger LB is going to have an easier time up against big OL.

There are some concerns about his burst as a pass rusher at 285. Plus dropping nicely into a zone and making the proper reads is impressive at this early stage but at 285 is a bit different than having to man up on a back or tight end.

Wow. Interesting.
I wonder if that was by design since he's going to basically be replacing JJ as a edge-setter/run stopper?
I mean, he'll still drop a good 10lbs this training camp more than likely and it's not like he's a soft 285lbs. He's built like a tank.
It is just surprising because how they talked about him dropping weight to become quicker off the edge. I just don't want them to do what they did with Kruger early on and try and turn him into something he's not.

yeah, thats a lot different than actually covering somebody but at least hes doing that well. The other part of that is what i think most people that have doubts are worried about, the actual physical ability to cover. as stiff as he was at 260-270 i cant see to 285 being better for him in that regard.

sounds like its not by design if theyre worried about his quickness/burst already, which i think we agreed isnt his strong suite to begin with. im not worried about him at 270 or less, but i would have hoped he came into camp at that than using camp to get into shape. Seems backwards from everything ive heard about him and his work ethic. even if hes packing on muscle, youd think hed be monitoring that if the teams, and himself, wanted to be at 265.

Big difference in impressing in coverage day 1 in camp and impressing in an actual game. There are so many athletic tight ends in the league now that they need to be sure that Upshaw can keep up with them.
Re: Camp notes ~ daily updates
Remember guys, there is a difference between being "out of shape" and being heavy. Just because your up to 285 lbs, it doesn't always means your out of shape. I mean I haven't seen Upshaw at camp, but from the pictures/videos I've seen, he's a just a very heavily built man. Pernell McPhee got 6 sacks in limited action last year, and is around 285 lbs, I don't see it being a problem, and I think Upshaw is going to have to fill the run stuffing void that we've lost with Redding and JJ.

McPhee also wasn't in line to play rush or sam OLB and was just a defensive end/pass rusher on select packages.
Upshaw is likely going to be out on the field most of the game.

Very true, he def has to take some weight off to be the player he's capable...He's strong as a bull with heavy hands, he's gonna be that way at 285 or 265, but at 265 he has a chance to affect the pass game more ways then just a bull rush. These NFL tackles are grown men and wont just overpower them like SEC tackles. With all that said i think training camp and preseason will put him in pro shape, i've heard no work ethic issues with him, he's just naturally a stout guy.

Not passing your conditioning test the 1st time means you are out of shape. Or, at least not in as good a shape as the team feels you should be.
Re: Camp notes ~ daily updates
I don't understand the uproar about Upshaw being 285lbs. Losing 10lbs is nothing at that weight. He'll lose that in training camp.
