Re: Anyone watching TURN on AMC (great history of first spies)
Well, i was avoiding spoiler posting, but yeah. Point is, you knew they couldn't have his secret found out by the Major or anything. I thought maybe they'd pass it off by having him run away or something, didn't expect he'd end up shooting the British soldier. And now, you wonder what he's going to do with the codebook burned, won't know how to write his coded letters anymore.

Good point and sorry about the spoiler but I'm sure the next season
will show how he does it because Culper did go on and discover
Arnold's treasonous offense and kept the British from taking West
Point.
I'm wondering what he does about a new house, move back in
with his dad who was the magistrate but Culper had everything
a nice house, a gorgeous wife and a gorgeous mistress who wasn't
happy to find her husband wasn't dead afterall and left
him to be Culper's mistress.
Culper was a man's man just like Washington. They
both had balls. I couldn't begin to imagine going thru what they
did to start a coutnry.

I am behind on this show.
I watched the first three episodes, but I may even go back and re-watch them because it has been a while.
Thank Lord Jeebus for On Demand.

Thank Lord Jesus for On Demand.
Fixed the spelling in Jesus name for you.
Sorry for the spoiler man. Remember in one of the
shows the woman hung her clothes a certain way
and that was a signal for the spies. It's true, she did.
In the show even the slaves knew what she was doing.
Woodhull is also Culper which was his code name.
___________________________
Anna Strong signalled Brewster that a message was ready with a black petticoat on her clothesline in Setauket, which was easily visible by Brewster from a boat in the Sound and by Woodhull from his nearby farm.

And the ledger or code book I mentioned above listed the names
of the agents in the ring and there was a number for each one.
Washington's # was 711 and there was a mysterious #235 w/o
a name. No one knows who that was.
Culper or Abraham Woodhull his real name had an agent name
Mulligan who discovered Benedict Arnold's plot. He was later arrested
by Arnold but there was no proof he was guilty so he was let go
after spending about 5 months in prison.
He later learned of a British plan to trap Wash and it would have
worked but the ring got word to Wash in time.
Mulligan also informed Wash of the plan to attack
Philly coming into Maryland because their defenses were
too strong elsewhere. They fought at Brandywine right up
the road from here on Rt 1. The British won and took over
Philly and Wash retreated to some place called Valley Forge.
It was also instrumental in giving Wash info about Trenton
athough who gave him the info is contested but Wash knew
the soldiers would be partying and not expecting an attack
on a freezing night across an ice packed Delaware River.
So there's a lot more stories to come out in future
seasons.
This ring was so secret that most Americans didn't even know about
it until the 1930s when certain letters from the ring's members were discovered and
hand writings from ring members were identified by historians.

Jamie Bell is from the North of England ;-)
Most of the main cast are from this side of the pond if that makes a difference
The actors who played the magistrate and Captain Simcoe are English
The actors who played the major and General Andre both grew up in England.
Also the actor who played Brewster is Australian
I suppose the actors are doing whatever accent they are told to do. Just throwing that in
Re: Anyone watching TURN on AMC (great history of first spies)
I was just thinking how amazing it was to accomplish all the ring did with the crudest methods like a clothes line for communications instead of all the electronic stuff they have today including spy satellites.
With the crudest equipment, the ring still won the war just like the CIA won the Cold War with all its advanced gadgetry.
