Re: Bobby Rainey named NFC offensive player of the week
Did the title get changed because "NFC Offensive Player Of The Week" didn't fit this forum?
(I know I never used used the phrasing "Did the Ravens screw up?" Could we get it changed to "Bobby Rainey -- In retrospect, a mistake?")
Re: Bobby Rainey named NFC offensive player of the week
Unless Rainey can run without any blocking. No they didn't screw up.
Take a look at Tampa's run game. All their backs have had success this year. And Rainey lit up one of the worse defenses in the league.
Put him behind this o-line and he's have similar results to Rice or Pierce.

I felt that Rainey was an upgrade on Rice, and he was exiled so it wasn't so apparent how bad Ray Rice is
I bet Rainey is 1/3 second faster than Ray Rice in 40yd dash.
Ray Rice born in 1987, Bobby Rainey born in 1987, end of story.
Re: Bobby Rainey named NFC offensive player of the week
Rainey's attitude in the preseason was refreshing, along with his productivity. Of course, he never would have been used in our complex offensive scheme. Major screw up.

While I agree with your overall premise, that isn't the point.
Why get rid of a perfectly good (and cheap) #3 running back? He already knew the system, he certainly was one of the 53 best during the pre-season IMO and clearly the Ravens like carrying 3 backs.

:word
Barry Sanders couldn't run behind our O line.

So we should have kept a guy who you admit wouldn't have had an impact one way or another due to our O line because he was cheap and knew the system?

Considering that they ended up replacing him with another guy who isn't having an impact, but doesn't know the system and is more expensive, I'd say yes.

The Ravens went 1 week with only having two running backs. After the Broncos game they worked out multiple guys and signed Shaun Draughn. He got hurt. Then they signed Bernard Scott, who hasn't dressed yet.
Both of those guys are experienced return specialists. Both of those guys are smaller, quick backs with decent receiving skills.
Bobby Rainey has all of those things and was already on the roster.
So, yes, I would have preferred to see them keep a cheap depth running back that already had experience in the system.
And what would it matter if he did or did not have an impact?
Was Rainey more impressive than guys like Aaron Mellette? Brynden Trawick? Anthony Levine?
In my estimation, he absolutely was better.
I just think they screwed up by not keeping him and have scrambled to fill the 3rd RB position.

Well, seeing how none of the 3rd running backs we've signed haven't seen the field either, what good would have keeping Rainey done?

Why sign Draughn and Scott?

Depth.
Could they have kept Rainey instead, sure. DId they "screw up" by not keeping him, I don't think they "screwed up". Maybe in hindisght it would have made more sense, but it's not like he'd have been the difference between winning and losing. So in that sense I don't think you can say it was a screw up.
