Re: This team won't have a chance at competing if we pay Flacco big money
Alex Smith was at his best when he had one of the top running games in the league to go along with a top defense.
With all the holes that need to be filled and the important roster decisions to be made within the next year I highly doubt our run game and defense will vault to the level it needs to be in order for Smith to replicate the same success.

Doesn't that sound a lot like Flacco?

Smith has been benched multiple times by the frankly clownish coaching staffs that preceded Harbaugh in SF. Who ran clownish systems, with clownish results. I'd not hold any pre-Harbaugh benching against him.
This most recent one... well, it might have happened without his concussion, and it might not have. It may wind up going down, if Kaepernick lives up to his promise, similar to Bledsoe's benching in favor of Brady. Do you hold the fact that Bledsoe isn't Brady against him?

Uhhh.... the fact that you might get him at 60% cost of what you have right now? Basically the same reason pragmatic people buy a Honda instead of a BMW, even if they can afford the BMW?
Re: This team won't have a chance at competing if we pay Flacco big money
IMO, Flacco is a better version of Alex Smith and is a comparable QB to Matt Schaub. Basically, a very good game manager. I can't see how it makes sense to pay a game manager the kind of money you pay a QB who is the reason why your team wins. The Ravens can win a SB with Flacco as their QB, but they are not going to win a SB because Flacco is their QB.

If they had to franchise Flacco, it's $14.5M, not $17M. In that case, they would have to release a bunch of guys.
If they signed Flacco to a deal that averages $17M a year, his 2013 Cap number won't be $17M, as that posts seems to indicate, it'll be more like $5-8M, so they wouldn't have to jettison all of those players.
Thank U Sir,
Which is why I asked to begin with. I knew
you'd know. I put it as a new thread because
as you said it's all over the place and it's the first time I've seen all those names listed, espcially Ray's.
Thanks again. That's why I come here.

For a good team looking to win a Super Bowl Alex Smith is not your guy.
I don't know if I would agree with that. It just might be that the 49ers feel that Kaepernick is better than Smith, which he may well be. The fact is that the 49ers made it to the NFC Championship Game with Alex Smith at QB last year. That is as far as the Ravens have gotten with Flacco. If Kaepernick were on the Ravens instead of Tyrod Taylor, do you think the Ravens would be so concerned about Flacco's contract status?

Which tells us nothing as to Smith's quality, as I said.

He was benched when Singletary was the HC. The 49ers were a mess back then. Why not look at last season when the 49ers made it to the NFC Championship Game with Alex Smith as their starting QB?
Re: This team won't have a chance at competing if we pay Flacco big money
Flacco and Smith have played roughly the same number of games in their careers so their stats are super easy to compare.
Joe's are better (in some cases significantly better) across the board. Better record, better completion %, more yards, more yards per attempt, more TDs, higher TD %, fewer picks, lower interception %. Alex has never finished a season with a QBR higher than Flacco's rookie year (he is currently higher than that but is also benched which shows how meaningful that particular stat is anyway.)
Stop with this idea that Alex Smith will be able to come within shouting distance of Joe Flacco if he came here unless you also find a way to bring his all pro Tight End and O line that's better than our's at 4 out of 5 spots.

Flacco is still 9-5 behind this rag tag o line that can't block for shit. You have Oher at LT that thinks he's a turn stile. Then, a tackle playing left guard, an over the hill center, over the hill right guard while yanda is out, and a rookie right tackle. Plus, the running game has struggled in large due to the o-line. Then, we all know about the defense.
No he didn't.
This year the 49ers O-line has given up 39 sacks and 60 QB hits. The Ravens O-line has given up 34 sacks and 62 QB hits.
In 2011 the 49ers O-line gave up 44 sacks and 82 QB hits. The Ravens gave up 33 sacks and 78 QB hits.
I know those stats don't tell the whole story, but let's not act like Smith has been behind some great O-line the past few seasons.
